Higher Education

For higher education, Eastern Oklahoma State College offers Associates degrees and distance-learning Bachelor and Master degree programs in City limits. Within 75 miles, there are four universities: East Central University, Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and Oklahoma Baptist University. The state’s two largest universities, Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma University, are conveniently located in central Oklahoma and are a short drive away.

Kiamichi Tech

Kiamichi Technology Centers (KTC) is a ten-campus network that covers all of southeast Oklahoma. KTC providers technical training to help students learn skills that are tailored existing jobs, based on the needs of local businesses. Through a partnership with McAlester Public Schools, students can take classes during the school day and can even receive a certification prior to high school graduation.

Where the Buffaloes Roam

McAlester Public Schools, home of the Buffaloes, include nine facilities to educate local students from early childhood through high school. There are three elementary schools, along with three early childhood centers, Parker Intermediate Center for fifth- and sixth- grade students, Puterbaugh Middle School and McAlester High School, which also houses the alternative school, Key Academy, for at-risk students.
